Biosphere utilizes high tech and educated evaluations to determine positives and challenges of each project. Soil testing and aerial photographs aid each individual landscape design. Balancing the technology aspect, each project implements proven methods of cultivation and conservation.
Biosphere founder Jeffrey Dubois is an ecologist who believes in the mutually beneficial relationship provided to us by the natural world.
With an early life spent amongst pristine forests, Jeff achieved a Deans List education with a Bachelor's in Marine Science and Biology through University of Maine. When approaching nature, he focuses on how each species interacts with its neighbors to create a flourishing environment.
He's traveled various parts of the world on research missions studying ecology and ecosystems; braving occasional severe environmental hazards. Jeff is a resident of the Low country. He is a naturalist, landscape designer and philosopher. Though, if you ask him, he'll likely tell you he's just a back porch sage.
The intention of Biosphere is to empower our community in action to protect, enhance and restore low country habitats thus reducing impacts of climate change - one yard at a time! Each project is customized under one of our five levels of service
Soil testing is invaluable as it clarifies positives and challenges for your site - and what specific plants can thrive in its current state. With Tier #1 service, your location specific samples are submitted for diagnosis through Clemson University. Upon receiving results, we will explain the data to you in a way you understand.
This soil test will give us information on the following parameters: pH, buffer pH, nitrogen, potassium, extractable phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, organic matter, and the cation exchange capacity (a metric to measure how well your soil holds nutrients). Micronutrients vital to all growth - though rarely limiting, including Copper, Manganese, Iron, boron, molybdenum - will be screened for as well.
The health of your soil is important, and healthy soil can provide many ecological services to you, your family and the ecosystem at large; bigger crops, better quality food and a carbon sink being among the few. With Biosphere’s report, you will have the data necessary to go forth and put your DIY knowledge to practice. You can always plant what will do best in the soil, or amend the soil to satisfaction. Combined with the infinite knowledge of the internet, you will have vital foundational information to guide you to success!

Knowing your soil composition is vital to success. Soil testing might let you know to try something else, or try amending the soil. After taking samples from around your property, we utilize state-of-the-art aerial drone photography to design custom permaculture zones. With this soil sample data, we will map out the composition of your soil. Within each permaculture zone, there are collections of different species that can be grown to outstanding effect. Sometimes this means planting something unfamiliar, or a helpful non-native. Here at Biosphere, we will cater to your property by providing lists of species coordinated with aerial photographs, giving you and you property the designs to thrive.

Whether it is a 4’x10’ raised bed, a revamping of an established garden or a new community space - we’ve tested your soil and provided a design maximizing your living carbon. Jeff Dubois will coach and work together side by side with you throughout installation of a specific aspect of your design - so that you can be successful continuing on your own terms. Lets establish a new living element to your home and know that you are getting help from one of the best. Our tier 3 service is the instillation of a single aspect of the design, permaculture garden coaching and will be used in conjunction with the soil samples and aerial photographs. If you are unable to make alterations to your lawn, our tier 3 service will be oriented elsewhere such as a lanai, porch, balcony or establishment of houseplants for stunning visual appeal and bountiful home harvests. Here at Biosphere, we intend both you and life to flourish.

You have decided to make a large adjustment to your home ecosystem. Whether this is the instillation of an 8-tree orchard, a 20x40 foot garden or just looking to maximize your ecological design, Biosphere’s tier 4 service will be Jeff Dubois's full assistance and mind for the installation. Using your ecological design, you, me, and whoever you have to assist us will begin making positive changes to your land. A mentor of mine always said, start close to the house and then work out. You will reap the rewards of your efforts a few steps from the door.

Nothing can be more devastating than spending time, money and energy towards cultivation, only to have some pesky pest invade and wither your plants away. With Biosphere we hope to limit this disappointment by instructing on plants that have a history of surviving the conditions that we have and by designing home habitats that maintain their own checks and balances. For our Tier 5 service I will be conducting monthly checkups to help spot, diagnose and treat symptoms of malnutrition for the first year, beginning after the instillation is complete. After our year together you will have the skills, knowledge and confidence to move forward on your growing food forest. We want to see you succeed, for together we can help make a greener world.
